i work in a nursing home and one of the patients has type A flu. how contagious is it? is there a chance i can get it?

I'd recommend, wearing a mask--while cleaning his/her room..that's what my Mom had to do, while cleaning resident's rooms in a hospital setting--while they were sick .. or even in hospital, to make sure she wouldn't catch anything.

Ps.. I hear it's pretty contagious..but... I'm not really sure though.

Illnesses are put into categories from A to V. Type A being very contagious and V not being contagious. So a type A is very contagious. Be careful.
