How to Get Rid of Bed Bugs – used by Pest Control Companies

The method most used by pest control companies is a mixture of steam treatment and insecticide, usually a solution with d-Phenothrin mixed in. d-Phenothrin is a non-systemic insecticide which is effective by contact and as a stomach poison. Used for power-spray, mist, thermal fog, aerosol and ULV applications. The major use of d-phenothrin is in the control of nuisance insects such as bed bugs and human lice.

There is mixed opinions on the bed bugs ability to detect insecticide; because of this, some companies are now using Chlorfenapyr which is non-repellent and effective for a period of ti

Below, we cover steam treatment and what you need to know, plus mention a few other methods of pest control.

Steam Treatment

Steam is the most common method of pest control and will eliminate all stages of the bed bug, but not necessarily all bedbugs. Studies suggest that steam treatment followed by insecticides is a better solution than insecticides alone; the bugs that steam misses will be have to make it through the insecticide increasing your odds of success.

Not all steam cleaners work and it’s suggested that you select a cleaner that has the following:

Heat Treatment

Bed bugs are very sensitive to heat and are rapidly killed when exposed to temperatures over 45°C. If your are using heat to kill the bed bugs, it needs to happen as fast as possible or the gradual temperature increase will cause the bugs to scatter and possibly lead to further infestation, such as to the room next door or the floor above, etc.

When using heat to control your infestation, remember that some material is more resistant to heat than others, such as your mattress or couch; if they are in there, the temperature may not be as hot as the surrounding area.

WARNING: Also be aware that some items will explode, such as aerosol can which state on the label of the container to not store them in temperatures greater than 120 degrees Fahrenheit. 114 degrees Fahrenheit is recommended for bed bugs and care should be taken not to exceed this temperature! Also consider photographs and heat sensitive materials when considering this type of pest control.

The short answer is: No. This is a very tricky situation, and your best bet is to call an exterminator. This is unfortunate, since bed bug treatments are very time-consuming and costly, but this is the only way to make sure you completely take care of the problem. Consider these facts: -Bed bugs live in other places besides the bed--in baseboards, carpet, in books, even inside your tv if populous enough. So even if you take apart and thoroughly treat your bed and mattress, new bugs will simply emigrate from other areas. -By simply spraying a room, you may eliminate a lot of the bugs, but it's very unlikely you'll get all of them--and you only need one gravid female to start the infestation all over again. -When a hotel treats a bed bug infestation, they will generally remove the bed and mattress from the room, take it down to an "oven truck", and cook the heck out of it. Meanwhile, up in the room, they spray with a variety of chemicals--some knockdown (immediate kill) agents, some residual agents to prevent future infestations for a while (usually a year). They open up every drawer, the television, the clock radio, and pull up the carpet. They also treat the rooms above, below, and to each side of the target room, to prevent the bugs from simply crawling through the walls to safe harborage. This should let you know how difficult they are to get rid of! Definitely call an exterminator, who will have the knowledge of a variety of techniques, both chemical and physical, to help you with the bugs. This is one problem where is it definitely worth the expense to have the job done right.

Invest in bed-bug mattress covers and pillow cases. Go to www.drleonards.com, and search for bed-bug mattress cover. The cost is from $25-$45. I have a king-size bed, and I paid $40 for the mattress cover/pillow cases. The mattress cover zips from one end to the other, and there is Velcro to add another safety measure. Bed bugs usually are found on the headboard, mattress, frame, bed legs. Before installing the mattress cover, inspect these locations to be certain they are free of bed bugs. I have had the mattress cover and pillow-case covers for a year without any exposure of bed bugs.
